The nomination of Shweta Suman, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) candidate from the Kaimur Mohania assembly constituency, has been annulled. The Election Commission made this decision because Suman had declared her permanent residence in Chanduali district, Uttar Pradesh, during the 2020 Bihar elections, but for the upcoming 2025 elections, she claimed her residence to be in Bihar. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lodged a complaint with the Election Commission regarding this matter, leading to the cancellation of her nomination today.
Impact on Opposition in Bihar
This development comes just a day after significant setbacks for the opposition in East Champaran, where two key nominations from the Grand Alliance were rejected, making the Sugouli seat potentially easier for the NDA. The current RJD MLA from Sugouli, Shashi Bhushan Singh, had submitted his nomination as a candidate for the Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP). However, due to a technical error, his nomination was also rejected. Since VIP is not a registered regional party, Singh was required to present ten proposers for his nomination, but he only provided one, violating RJD's regulations. The Election Commission identified discrepancies in his nomination papers, resulting in the cancellation of his candidacy.
Further Complications for the Opposition
Adding to the challenges faced by the opposition, the nomination of rebel RJD candidate Om Prakash Chaudhary was also canceled. An investigation revealed that several pages of his nomination papers were left blank, highlighting organizational issues within the Grand Alliance. The deadline for submitting nomination papers for the first phase of voting ended on October 17, while the deadline for the second phase concluded on Monday. Voting for the 243-member Bihar Assembly will take place in two phases on November 6 and November 11, with the counting of votes scheduled for November 14.
